I just bought a new 1998 Savage LS650 that was still in the crate when I made a deposit on it. Of course the dealer uncrated it and set it up for me! And no $200 setup charge like some dealers. Shipping and setup was included in the price. Less than a mile on the odometer, 12 months left on the warranty, for just under $400 more than your dealer is asking for the used 1997. Yours doesn't sound like a bad deal if the bike is really clean, the dealer is reputable, and he will stand behind the bike with some sort of warranty. But there may be better deals out there. I think it would be hard to top the deal I got, for example...
Check the bike and the dealer out as best you can, try not to catch the igottahaveanewbikenow fever. If it will make you happy, go for it!
